Punk
Punk music is a style of music that originated in the 1970s in the USA and Great Britain. It is characterized by its fast, aggressive guitar riffs, its simple but catchy song structures, and its rebellious attitude. Punk music is usually carried by guitars, bass, drums and vocals and is often seen as a reaction to established social structures and mainstream pop culture.
Punk originated in New York City in the early 1970s and was popularized by bands such as The Ramones, The Stooges, and The New York Dolls. These bands shaped the genre with their fast, catchy songs and rebellious attitude and were considered the forerunners of punk rock.
In the late 1970s, punk became popular in the UK and bands such as The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned made their mark on the genre. These bands focused on political and social issues in their lyrics and were known for their energetic live shows.
One of the most style-defining albums of punk rock is "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols" by The Sex Pistols, released in 1977. This album was characterized by its rebellious attitude and provocative lyrics and became a classic of punk rock.
In the 1980s, punk evolved into many different subgenres, including hardcore punk.

Ska is a type of music that originates from Reggae and Jamaican music. The British punk movement also borrowed from Ska, and a good example of a band that made Ska popular in the mainstream was the UK pop/party band, 'Madness'. (Remember the song "Our House"?). This track is an uptempo ska with a horns top line. It's also available as an underscore version, without the horns.

Combining elements of traditional mento and calypso with an American jazz and rhythm and blues sound, it was a precursor in Jamaica to rocksteady and later reggae. It is the predominant form of music listened to by Rudeboys, Mods, and Skinheads, amongst others, with artists such as Symarip, Laurel Aitken, The Charmers and The Pioneers aiming songs at these groups as far back as the 1960s.
