Gothic Metal ist ein Subgenre des Heavy Metal und kombiniert die Schwere des Doom Metal mit den dunklen Atmosphären von Gothic-Rock. Das Genre entwickelte sich in den frühen 1990er Jahren in Nord-Europa (zunächst aus einer Fusion von Death Metal und Doom Metal). Die Texte sind in der Regel düster, introvertiert, gespickt mit Einflüssen aus Gothic Fiction („Schauer-Romanen“) sowie persönlichen (meist negativen) Erfahrungen.
Zu den Pionieren des Gothic Metal zählt man die britischen Bands Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride und Anathema. Später gesellten sich aus den USA Type O Negative, Saviour Machine hinzu. Die Norwegische Band Theatre of Tragedy entwickelte eine "Schönheit und das Biest"-Ästhetik, indem sie aggressive männliche Vocals mit einem klaren/feinen Frauengesang kombinierte. Diese Kontrastwirkung versuchen mittlerweile viele Gothic-Metal-Gruppen. Ende der 1990er Jahre bildete sich Symphonic-Metal als Variante des Gothic Metal heraus. Im 21. Jahrhundert etablierte sich Gothic Metal in Europa im Mainstream (vor allem in Finnland). Bands wie HIM, Lullacry oder Poisonblack hatten weltweite Hit-Singles und waren in den Album-Charts zu finden. In den USA kamen allerdings nur wenige Bands wie HIM, Evanescence oder Cradle of Filth zu einem kommerziellen Erfolg. Mehr Infos auf Wikipedia: Gothic-Metal
