Instrumental rock was most popular between the mid-1950s to mid-1960s. In this decade Surf music was very popular. Many rock guitarists were influenced by The Ventures' precise guitar work. In the 1970s Progressive rock and art rock performers featured virtuosic instrumental performances. One of the best-selling instrumental albums ever, with 16 millions copies sold is Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield, released in 1973.

free instrumental music?
Instrumental rock is a generic term used to identify those songs or artists of the rock genre who prefer the instrumental component to the vocal one: the latter is for the most part practically absent.
Being a generic definition, there are no precise canons for this musical genre: largely instrumental compositions can be found almost everywhere in rock.
Many artists in the course of their career have focused on the creation of entirely instrumental works in rock: Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, The Ventures, Booker T.
Nowadays, the term instrumental rock has become synonymous with experimental rock, progressive rock, fusion or post-rock, because in most of the works of these musical genres there are almost no vocal parts. In fact, when rock & roll was born, even before the explosion of the British invasion, it was more artists and ensembles who played instrumental music than sung. In the years to come, it will be more and more progressive rock artists and jazz-influenced artists to make compositions entirely instrumental.
