New Wave 1/2

Alternative >> New Wave

Strictly speaking, New Wave is no particular style of music, but rather a generic term for a number of Pop and Rock styles that emerged between the late ‘70s and ‘80s. In the beginning, there was an influence of post Punk wave (bands such as Blondie, Devo, Talking Heads, Roxy Music, and The B52s), and the music was approached mainly as an electronic/experimental makeover. The music was also partly recognized in the mainstream, and was seen as rather suitable as a Disco and Pop sound. Subgenres and fusions (bands such as The Police, Madness, and Dr. Feelgood) developed later. Examples are New Romantic and Gothic rock.
New Wave was seen as a second craze of Punk. Opposite Punk, New Wave stands out as having more complex music and lyrics. Additionally, design and art have greater meaning. Clipped guitar rhythms at high tempos are typical of the music. The keyboard interludes were also static and composed with stop-start structures. The interpreters sounded often jarring or rather geeky, and played live, generally nervous and hyperactive. Outstanding protagonists were the Talking Heads, Devo, and Elvis Costello. These adopted the forms of robots, portrayed their bodies through uncontrollable dances, and amplified it through nervous, shrilly voices. At the same time they wore an extroverted fashion, such as brightly colored suits and/or big glasses. A detailed article may be found under Wikipedia’s further links: New Wave Music.
