Smooth Jazz is a mostly instrumentally oriented subgenre of jazz and was conceptually created for a new radio format in the late 1970s. It combines the elements pop music and jazz with each other. The harmonies and melodies are kept harmoniously simple, whereby Smooth Jazz is sometimes disrespectfully referred to as department store or elevator music ("Easy Listening") or background music.
