Surf Rock 1/3

Rock >> Surf Rock

Surf Rock is a response to the complex studio productions of Phil Spector and others, which are difficult for beginners to reproduce. In the early 1960s, hundreds of garage groups were formed, based on the foundations of rock'n'roll. In 1963, bands like The Chantays with "Pipeline" and The Surfaris with "Wipe Out" were instrumental successes in the USA. The Beach Boys are the most important representatives of the vocal side of surf rock. They score with hits like Surfin' USA, Surfin' Safari and Surfin' Bird, but already in 1965 their sound is quite complicated and comparable to the famous Sound Wall of Sound by Spector. The godfathers of instrumental surfing in Australia are The Atlantics.

Revival

At the end of the 80's there was a revival of surf music, which was mainly limited to the indie scene. The most famous bands are Man or Astro-Man?, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, Laika & the Cosmonauts and The Mermen. In the general public this Surf-Rock-Revival is known by the music of the movie Pulp Fiction (1994, by Quentin Tarantino).
