Star Wars is classified in the genre Space Opera and as a heroic epic. The films play in the fictitious universe of a distant past and deal with the ongoing battle between good and evil - two sides represented by the Light and the Dark Side of Power. The first two trilogies essentially tell of the downfall of the Galactic Republic, the rise of the Galactic Empire, and the successful revolution against the Empire by the former Republic leaders. Star Wars was inspired by works from pop culture, including those by director Akira Kurosawa, and Joseph Campbell's Myth Theory.
