A television advertisement conveys a message aimed at marketing and promoting a product (good or service). To this end, companies have advertisers and marketers place commercials for their products in paid slots set up for this purpose. The advertising revenues are used by the broadcasters to finance their programmes from a technical and content point of view.
Commercials are usually no longer than 30 seconds.
Political advertising within the framework of an election campaign will also be placed. In some countries, such as France, political TV spots are severely restricted. In Germany, for example, political advertising must be declared recognisable as such.
The first television advertisement appeared in the United States on 1 July 1941 as part of a television baseball game.
