Grunge 1/2

Alternative >> Grunge

Grunge is a style of music that became popular in the United States in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It is characterized by its raw, unpolished-sounding guitar work, dark and introspective lyrics, and rebellious attitude. Grunge is usually carried by guitars, bass, drums and vocals and is a mixture of heavy metal, punk rock and alternative rock.

Grunge originated in the city of Seattle and was popularized by bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. These bands were pioneers of grunge and shaped the genre through their music, which was inspired by the punk and metal scene, but also through their rebellious and anti-establishment attitude.

Grunge experienced its greatest popularity in the early 1990s, when bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam stormed the charts with their albums "Nevermind" and "Ten" and became international superstars. These albums were style-defining and made grunge one of the dominant musical styles of the 1990s.

Other well-known grunge bands of the 1990s included Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, and Screaming Trees. These bands combined the traditional elements of grunge with influences from classic rock and alternative rock to create their own sound.

Grunge also had a strong visual component and was portrayed by musicians through the use of flannel shirts, doc martens, and other casual, plain-looking clothing.

Grunge also had a strong social and political dimension, and many grunge musicians used their platform to protest injustice and oppression. The genre had a short period of popularity, but grunge still has a lasting impact.
