Country Blues 1/9

Country & Folk >> Country >> Country Blues

Country blues is a genre of music that emerged in the early 20th century in the rural Southern United States. It is characterized by a blend of traditional blues and country music styles, featuring acoustic instruments like guitar, harmonica, and sometimes fiddle or banjo.

Country blues often tells stories of hardship and struggle, drawing on the experiences of rural African Americans in the pre-World War II South. The lyrics are often highly personal and poetic, exploring themes like love, loss, and social injustice.

Some notable country blues artists include Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi John Hurt, and Lightnin' Hopkins. These musicians had a profound influence on the development of later blues and rock and roll genres, and their music continues to be celebrated and studied today.

Some of the most well known albums of the genre are:

"King of the Delta Blues Singers" by Robert Johnson (1961) - This album, which collects recordings made by Robert Johnson in the 1930s, has become a classic of the country blues genre. Johnson's haunting vocals and virtuosic guitar playing have inspired generations of musicians, and his songs like "Cross Road Blues" and "Love in Vain" have become standards.
"Moanin' in the Moonlight" by Howlin' Wolf (1959) - Howlin' Wolf was one of the most important figures in the Chicago blues scene of the 1950s and 60s, and this album, his debut, is considered a classic of the genre. It features songs like "Smokestack Lightnin'" and "Evil" that have become blues standards.
"The Complete Recordings" by Mississippi John Hurt (1996) - This two-disc set collects the complete recordings of Mississippi John Hurt, a country blues artist who gained popularity in the 1960s folk revival. Hurt's gentle fingerpicking and warm vocals are showcased on songs like "Frankie" and "Stack O' Lee Blues."
"Blind Lemon Jefferson: The Complete Recordings" by Blind Lemon Jefferson (1991) - Blind Lemon Jefferson was one of the most popular and influential country blues artists of the 1920s, and this collection features all of his recorded output. Jefferson's intricate fingerpicking and high, clear voice can be heard on songs like "Matchbox Blues" and "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean."
"Texas Flood" by Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble (1983) - While not strictly a country blues album, "Texas Flood" features a blend of blues, rock, and country influences that can be traced back to the country blues tradition. Vaughan's fiery guitar playing and soulful vocals are showcased on songs like "Pride and Joy" and "Love Struck Baby."

Country blues often evokes a range of emotions, including sadness, melancholy, and longing, as well as joy, hope, and resilience. The lyrics often deal with themes of love, loss, and struggle, and the music itself can be both mournful and uplifting at the same time.

The raw, emotional quality of country blues comes from its roots in the rural South, where it was created by African American musicians who used music as a means of expressing their experiences of hardship and oppression. The simplicity of the instrumentation and the directness of the lyrics make it a powerful medium for communicating complex emotions.

At its best, country blues can create a deep emotional connection between the performer and the listener, drawing them into a shared experience of pain, struggle, and ultimately, triumph.

18. Midnight Train 01:01

A melodic country track with a train-like brush drum rhythm, featuring Dobro top line. Excellent feel-good material, great for daytime TV, fishing, outdoors, hobby, men, motors and leisure. There is also an excellent sounding underscore version which has a wide range of uses as background.
