Gothic Metal 1/2

Gothic metal is a subgenre that combines the heaviness of Doom metal with the dark atmospheres of Gothic rock. The genre developed in the early ‘90s in Northern Europe (initially from a fusion of href="http://www.proudmusiclibrary.com/en/royalty-free-music/death-metal/">Death metal and Doom metal). The texts are usually gloomy, introverted, and loaded with gothic fiction influence (Gothic novel), as well as with personal –mostly negative- experiences.



Among the pioneers of Gothic metal we find the British bands Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, and Anathema. Later, American bands Type O Negative and Saviour Machine joined them. The Norwegian band Theatre of Tragedy developed a “Beauty and the Beast” aesthetic, which combined aggressive manly vocals with a clear/acute woman’s voice. This contrasting effect has been attempted since then by many Gothic metal groups. At the end of the ‘90s, Symphonic metal forms as a variation of Gothic metal. In the XXI century, Gothic metal is established in the mainstream, especially in Finland. Bands such as HIM, Lullacry, or Poisonblack had worldwide hit singles and could be found on the album charts, albeit few bands such as HIM, Evanescence, or Cradle of Filth had a commercial success in the U.S.A.
