An electric guitar is a guitar developed for electric sound pickup. In contrast to the acoustic guitar, it does not rely primarily on an acoustic sound body to amplify the string vibrations. This allows other designs to be achieved, which give many electric guitars, among other things, a particularly easy playability. A further advantage is the variety of sounds that can be produced using guitar amplifiers and effect devices.
The development of the electric guitar was driven by the desire to give the instrument a higher volume. This became necessary because the guitarists in jazz with purely acoustic instruments could only assert themselves poorly against wind instruments or even only a single piano. Thus the electric guitar gradually developed from the well-known acoustic guitar. Therefore, the term electric guitar is understood in a broader sense to mean the entire range of acoustic (jazz) guitars with attached pickups on the one hand and guitars without resonators on the other. Between these two extremes there are numerous mixed forms which have remained until today and which are mostly called "semi-acoustic" electric guitars or semi-acoustic resonance guitars (e.g. Gibson ES-335).
